Global Music Teacher Training

The Global Music Teacher Training programme from Olympias Music Foundation, funded by Arts Council England explored a new way to broaden and diversify Western models of music education.

We started a year long training in January 2025 and developed three exceptional global majority musicians with the teaching skills they need to share their own musical heritage with our young musicians as professional teachers.

This programme has provided skilled inspirational, relatable musical role models for young people from global majority backgrounds to learn non-western classical instruments. We currently teach santoor, djembe and harmonium and in September 2026 we will include a fourth non-western classical instrument to our wide range of instruments.

We hope our Global Music Teacher Training programme inspires a transformation in music education in the UK and that it will diversify future generations of audiences and music performers, creating a pipeline of future musical talent from different backgrounds and musical traditions.

Meet the teachers, musicians, parents, children and young people and the staff involved in this programme by clicking on the documentary More Than Music above.

As part of this project, we are delivering a three-year PhD studentship (co-funded by the Northern Charity Consortium and the RNCM) which commenced in September 2025, to assess the project outcomes and share these with the research community following completion.
