Programmes Manager, Patrick, reflects on a week of music and nature!
In the picturesque setting of Snowdonia, 8 OMF children and 3 members of staff embarked on a unique residential course, "Music and Mountains." This week-long experience was a blend of musical education and outdoor exploration, offering OMF children a chance to grow both as musicians and explorers.

Upon arrival, we were warmly welcomed by our amazing hosts, Richard and Mary. The initial days were filled with exploration of the surrounding forest, climbing trees, and getting to know the local fauna. A particular favourite from the children were the local pair of goats, who were extremely friendly. We were introduced to the many rope swings within the campsite and this became an essential evening activity for the remaining 6 days.

Every morning, the group were divided into three to do washing up, cleaning the toilets, and feeding the various animals (goats, guinea pigs, chickens, etc.). You can imagine which chore was the most popular!

After chores were done, mornings in Betws y Coed were dedicated to music. The group engaged in ensemble classes, learning traditional Welsh songs, ventured into improvisation sessions, and had one-to-one sessions with Richard and Mary. The diverse musical activities ensured that our children had a very different musical experience than what they were used to.

But it wasn't all about music. The afternoons were packed with outdoor adventures. From hiking through dense forests to scrambling up river gorges and swimming in tranquil lakes, the group experienced the best of what Snowdonia had to offer. One of the standout experiences was the ascent of Moel Siabod. The climb, filled with moments of discovery like identifying local mushrooms and drinking from clear streams, culminated in the breathtaking view from the summit.

The meals were also amazing! Mary provided some delicious home-cooked food, using lots of local ingredients. They were a good time to reflect and chat between music sessions and outdoor activities.

In addition to music and hiking, the group had the opportunity to learn photography from Karen Rangeley. With disposable cameras in hand, they captured the beauty of Snowdonia. It was a good exercise in self-discipline, as one child managed to get through all 25 pictures in the first day!

The culmination of the week was a heartfelt performance of "Sosban Fach," a traditional Welsh song, performed in an intimate kitchen setting. It was a fitting end to a week of hard work, growth, and shared experiences.
We can't wait to go back again next year!
